Today, International Women’s Day, is an important day for women throughout the world, but for us in WIZO International Women’s Day is a cause for celebration.
WIZO is a women’s movement, founded by women, for women – wherever they may be, and especially in our beloved State of Israel. We have made remarkable strides forward in the 94 years of our existence and our WIZO work continues.
We work side by side with women from across the globe, whether in the corridors of the United Nations, or in the WIZO Shelters for Battered Women, whether as mothers, or as career women, whether as volunteers or in key political positions, whether in the workplace or in the home . Our focus has always been on making a better world for women in any way possible, wherever they may be.
It is not surprising, after all, we are the People of the Book. We read in the very first chapters of the Bible that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. She was not created from his head, nor from his feet, she was created from his rib to work at his side, as his equal, and we in WIZO have continued to believe in that equality in all our activities to improve the Status of Women.
These very days we are celebrating Purim. And how little has changed. Two thousand three hundred and eight four years ago a decree was sent out for the annihilation of the Jewish people, in Persia, now known as Iran. Esther, became queen, having denied to reveal her being Jewish. In doing so she was able to save the Jewish people. We read the Book of Esther in her honour. At the same time, today our WIZO women throughout the world, are today still fighting the fight of Esther, against those who are promoting anti Semitism in their countries, as in the days of old.
We are closing in on an election in Israel. Women have had the vote in Israel since Independence was declared, and I call upon every woman in Israel to cast her vote, and to make her voice heard.
In doing so, on International Women’s Day, we will truly be celebrating our achievements.
With warm regards.
