And on the first day it came to pass that 20 WIZO Australia delegates met at the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem – very nice accommodation indeed! Weather not so nice but for rain-deprived Australians it was nice to feel gentle precipitation for a change.
Some delegates walked in the Old City; a small group were taken by our very knowledgeable guide #David Cherny to Yad Vashem. In 2 hours we learned so much about the horrors of the Shoah, its beginnings and long-term effects on world Jewry but leaving us with a sense of hope for the future. The over-arching impression was man’s inhumanity to man.
A leisurely afternoon was followed by a fantastic tour of The Friends of Zion museum The extraordinary displays, some interactive, showed the evolution and birth of the Jewish people in its own homeland. We learned that from the 19th century many Jews and Christians shared a belief that the land now known as Israel is the rightful home of the Jewish people
Our evening concluded with a dinner at Eucalyptus, owned by an Iraqi immigrant who explained the development of his restaurant from humble beginnings to the world culinary stage. Most interesting is that the staff are comprised of all religions
And so to bed …😴
