About WIZO

WIZO, a global Zionist woman’s movement founded on the values of volunteerism, drives excellence in education and innovative social action for the benefit of Israeli society, while addressing the changes needs of the individual at all stages of life.

Founded in 1920 by Zionist women at a time when women lacked representation in the Zionist institutions, the organisation has since the the foundations for education, social welfare and health care services in Israel.

WIZO today continues to work toward closing the gaps in Israeli society, supporting the wellbeing of toddlers, children, teenagers and older adults, advancing the status of women and strengthening the connection between world Jewry and Israel.

WIZO is recognised by the United Nations as a Non-Government Organisation, with consultative status on ECOSOC and UNICEF.

 Did you know?

  • WIZO established the first Tipat Chalav ("a drop of milk") baby welfare clinics, together with the Hadassah organization

  • Rachel (Cohen) Kagan, chairperson of WIZO Israel, was one of the two women, together with Golda Meir, who signed on Israel's Declaration of Independence

  • WIZO established the first (and only) women's political party in Israel

  • The Equal Rights for Women Law, proposed by WIZO Knesset member Rachel (Cohen) Kagan was passed in 1951

  • WIZO established a consumer organization which later become the Israeli Consumer Council, a government agency.

  • In 2008, WIZO was awarded the coveted Israel Prize in collaboration with Na'amat and Emunah for their special contribution to Israeli society.

  • WIZO is a world leader and innovator in the battle against domestic violence.
