Hannah Breckler z'I
Hannah (Marks) Breckler was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1901 and married Alec Breckler in Melbourne. The Breckler family were prominent members of the Perth Jewish community. The family owned the shoe stores Cecil Brothers and Betts and Betts in Perth.
Hannah was known for her wide ranging charitable commitments. Her personal charisma and generosity assured a good start for WIZO in Western Australia when she assumed the position of Foundation President of WIZO WA in 1937.
Less well known is that 20 years later Hannah founded the Opportunity Shop, the proceeds of which subsidized WIZO children’s causes in Israel, particularly Ahuzat Yeladim.
Strong links to the Melbourne Jewish community, where the Breckler’ s lived for some years, were of benefit to the Perth Jewish community as they kept the isolated community of WA aware of the latest developments in Israel.
