Hilde Hines z'l

After fleeing Germany and arriving in Adelaide in 1940, Hilde Hines z'l began her life’s work of inspiring the Jewish community, leading by example, and informing people of the dangers of prejudice and hatred.

In 1949, she was elected as the first Vice President of the WIZO State Council of South Australia, before serving as President from 1955 to 1973. She was also a Councillor of WIZO SA, and President of the WIZO Henrietta Irwell Carmel group for many years.

Hilde was a leading and inspiring figure in our movement for decades. She played an active role on the national scene and was made a Life Member of the Executive of WIZO Australia in appreciation and recognition of her outstanding contribution to our WIZO work. Hilde was also President of UIA in Adelaide. She was also very involved in the Penguin Club of SA, for public speaking.

On a personal level, Hilde Hines meant even a great deal more than that. She was someone who could always be relied upon to give sound advice and who set high standards in commitment, hard work and generosity. She indeed led by example.

As a teenager in Germany Hilde witnessed Hitler’s rise to power and rampant Anti-Semitism. After arriving in Adelaide in 1940 she dedicated her life to informing people about the Holocaust and the dangers of prejudice and hatred. A tireless community leader, Hilde was awarded the Centenary Medal and the United Israel Appeal Yair Medal for her services to the Jewish community.

In 2006, the year before her passing, Hilde published her family’s history: In Hinesight.
