Myrna Freed z'I

Myrna Freed z'I arrived in Brisbane from South Africa in Oct 1976...44 years ago. Her family's arrival represented the first wave of South African migration. The whole family was warmly embraced, and instantly became involved in the Brisbane Jewish community, especially Betar.

Although Myrna had studied science at University, her first love was language, speech therapy and children. In Brisbane, Myrna taught at Dutton Park and Kenmore South and her transition to Sinai College as inaugural Principal was a natural progression. Here Myrna focussed on each individual child, helping each one reach its full potential.

Simultaneously Myrna worked alongside Alan in his highly regarded psychiatry practice.

Mvrna and Alan shouldered more than their share of heartache and somehow carried on in the face of adversity, Myrna found the courage and the strength to continue, and always with a smile. She showed passion, commitment and dedication to WIZO, in her role as State President for many years. Monthly committee meetings were held in her ever welcoming home.

Myrna was also President of WIZO Aviva in Brisbane. Myrna received the Rebecca Sieff Award, and 2 bricks were placed on the Road of Hope at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim in Haifa in her honour.

Myrna remained at the helm during her illness, her hospitalization, even when she had an unwelcome but extended sojourn in intensive care. Myrna moved to Sydney to be near her son and continued her WIZO involvement as best she could.
