Rose Kornan z'I
Rose was born in Melbourne in 1915. Her grandfather had been in the First Aliyah and was one of the founders of Rishon Le Zion. He had walked to Palestine from Russia.
Rose's charity and selflessness were legendary. Her motto was "Who can I help today?”
Rose's interests, apart from charity work, were varied. She played tennis, golf and swam. She played the piano and was an accomplished artist.
During WW 2 she volunteered to work for the Red Cross.When the Bialystoker Centre was started by her husband Issy and a group of his friends, Rose went each week to help with the running of the Centre. She also helped with fundraising and organized the Annual Ball.
Rose helped with the formation of Mt. Scopus College. She became President of the Mothers' Club and later formed the Parents and Subscribers Association. She launched the first Debutants Ball at the College. When Rose retired from the Presidency of the Mothers' Club she became interested in WIZO. Israel and WIZO became her great passions. Rose became President of WIZO Hadassim, a position she held for many years. Rose helped set up the WIZO Hadassim Opportunity Shop in Carlisle St. During her Presidency WIZO Hadassim arranged many and varied successful functions.
After her Presidency she became a member of the WIZO State Council of Victoria, holding the position of Chairman of Organization. This was a position she also held as a member of the WIZO Federation of Australia.
Amongst many awards and honours Rose received the ultimate WIZO Award, the Rebecca Sieff Award. She was made an Honorary Life Member of the WIZO Federation of Australia. Rose's communal spirit lives on through her daughters, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren.
