Betty Wilkenfeld z'l

Betty was born Bracha Bloch in Varniai, Lithuania in 1930 and arrived in Australia with her mother and two brothers in 1933 aged 2 ½. Her father had arrived some time earlier and founded the Bloch ballet business.

Betty was the first Jewish girl in NSW to complete Hebrew for her Leaving Certificate.

She began her teaching career at the NSW Board of Jewish Education and Moriah College.

She married Gershon Wilkenfield in 1953 and together they had 3 children.

Betty, together with Gershon joined her father’s growing business, which under their management propelled the business to become one of the world’s top three ballet clothing companies.

She was involved in many organisations and Synagogues whilst enjoying the freedom and power of building up a modern, unique, worldwide business which still runs today stronger than ever under the leadership of her children.

Betty was passionate about the Jewish community and Israel.

Her communal involvement included roles on the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, at the Sydney Jewish Museum and as President of WIZO NSW

With her high profile in the Jewish community and her creative approach, Betty brought increased recognition to WIZO and contributed in so many positive ways to WIZO’s success over the years. She passed away in 2018.
