Millie Coronel z'l
Millie Coronel was born Amelia Frances Metz in Ballarat in 1908, where she attended the Ballarat Girls Grammar School.
In 1929 she married Victor Coronel at the local Synagogue. In 1937 the Coronels and their two young daughters moved to Tasmania, where Victor took up an appointment as an architect for the Tasmanian Government.
In 1944, Ida Wynn came to Hobart and with her encouragement, a WIZO group was started in January 1945. Millie was the founding President of WIZO Ayanoth, a position that she held for a total of 33 years, retiring in 1985. In 1988 Millie was made a Life President of WIZO Ayanoth and in 1983 an Honorary Life Member of the WIZO State Council of Victoria.
The Annual Morning Tea for WIZO, which was the main function in the small WIZO community, was held at Millie’s home for 23 years.
Millie also worked for the Red Cross and was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1983. She was a very active member of the Red Cross helping and cooking for their fundraising morning teas and luncheons.
In 1975 Millie received the Rebecca Sieff Award and in 1985 was made a Life Governor of Ahuzat Yeladim in grateful acknowledgement and appreciation of outstanding leadership and dedication for 40 years…1945 – 1985.
Millie moved to Melbourne in the late 1980’s and became involved on the Executive of the WIZO State Council of Victoria where she attended for many years and was an active participant.
In the early 1990s she was awarded B’nai B’rith’s Menorah Award.
Millie passed away 9th July , 2004
