Rae Craddock z'I
Rae Craddock grew up in Perth as part of a family active in Jewish communal and sporting activities. As a young woman, Rae was a successful candidate for WIZO Younger Set (later Galil) in the JNF Queen Competition. This ignited Rae’s enthusiasm for WIZO.
Rae joined the Yaffa group when it was formed in the 1960’s and organised many successful fundraising events. She was also active on State Council. In 1979 Rae was elected State President and brought many innovative ideas to the organisation. Rae instigated the successful and popular Mother Goose Competition which proved an excellent fundraiser for several years.
During her years as State President, Rae was faced with difficult changes in the management of kosher catering for the community which had been a major source of funds for WIZO. Rae negotiated solutions with the Rabbinic authorities with sensitivity but also with strength and dignity.
Rae’s major accomplishment was the instigation of WIZO Shabbat. Rae felt there should be communal recognition for WIZO. Through consultation with Rabbi Coleman Shabbat Nachamu (“comfort ye, comfort ye”) was chosen as WIZO Shabbat. It was felt that as WIZO provided comfort to those it helps this was the most appropriate parsha. It has remained a highlight of the WIZO calendar.
Rae had worked in fashion for many years and organised a series of fashion parades with professional models showing clothes from leading fashion retailers in Perth. These events, usually held in leading hotels, attracted large audiences not just from the Jewish community but from the wider community as well. These elegantly staged events brought WIZO work to the awareness of a much greater audience.
Rae’s Presidency brought many successful years for WIZO in Western Australia.
