Rosette Dayan z'l

Rosette Dayan z'l was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1917.

Rosette's parents encouraged her to pursue an education, which she did.

It was very rare in that era for a woman to pursue a career.

In 1940 she married Freddy Dayan and started a family.

With the formation of Israel in 1948, antisemitism was on the rise in Egypt and over the next 20 years virtually all 100,000 Jews left Egypt.

In early 1949 the entire family left Egypt and travelled to Tasmania, where she initially became a French teacher and later she taught English to migrants.

Rosette and her husband became active members of the Hobart Liberal Jewish Congregation. Rosette was one of the founders of WIZO AYANOTH in Hobart and was very active in organising social events and raising money to support WIZO projects in Israel. She particularly enjoyed the company of this small group of Jewish women as Hobart had such a small Jewish population. She passed away May 1998.
