Sylvia Green
Sylvia is the second child of two holocaust survivors who instilled in her the love of Israel and the necessity for a Jewish homeland.
Sylvia’s voluntary work began whilst her children were at primary school where she became President of the Parent’s Association. As her children grew, she looked for another area in which to volunteer. One day, she visited Beth Weizmann and was introduced to WIZO and Clara Britbart. She explained what she was looking for and Clara said, “I have a group for you”. That very night, Sylvia attended her first WIZO Masada meeting. The next day, she received a phone call from Nina Richwol who thanked her for coming and even offered to pick her up and take her to the next meeting. After that warm welcome, Sylvia was hooked!
Sylvia joined WIZO Masada as a member, and for two years, from 2008-2010, acted as Co- President, before taking on the post of President in 2010/2011. Sylvia is extremely proud of WIZO Masada’s achievements during this time, winning Masada’s first ever first place in the 2009 WIZO Quest, and two runner- up places in subsequent competitions.
She became Vice-President of WIZO Victoria in 2011 and after only a few months took over the presidency, which she admits was a very steep learning curve. She remained as President till early 2017. In 2018, Sylvia became Co-President with Helen Granek.
Over her term, Sylvia is extremely proud to have formed four new groups, WIZO Harmony, WIZO David, WIZO Kids and WIZO Teens. She also instigated the annual Charidy fundraiser, the Volunteer of the Year award, the annual International Women’s Day event and reactivated The Sponsor a Child Program. Together with Pamela Schwartz, Sylvia took over the publication of the annual magazine writing and sourcing all the articles. In 2018, she single-handedly planned and organised WIZO Nirim’s 60th Diamond Anniversary birthday celebration. Sylvia is immensely proud of the fact that she secured both Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin as guest speakers for WIZO Victoria functions.
Sylvia is married to David and is the proud mother of two children, and two gorgeous grandchildren. Her hobbies include travelling, reading, and a variety of arts and crafts.
