Dr Alice Benfey z'|
Dr. Alice Benfey z”l was born in Berlin in 1901. After earning a degree in Political Science, she and her husband fled Germany and arrived in Australia in 1939. Soon after meeting Ida Wynn, Alice formed a group for refugee women from Central Europe known as WIZO Cental, later WIZO Sharon. She was Chairperson of the WIZO State Council of Victoria from 1954-1957, WIZO Australia Federal President from 1960-1964, and was elected to an ad personam position on the World WIZO Executive. Alice’s family have carried on her passion for Zionism. Her daughter, Marlis Cohen, was WIZO Victoria State Treasurer and State President, and Federal Treasurer of WIZO Australia for many years – and her granddaughter, Sharene Hambur, is currently President of Zionism Victoria.
